Why a mining company keeps switches on the shelf

A mining room lives or dies on its network. A managed gigabit switch with a real PoE budget is worth more to a farm than another cheap unmanaged box: you get per-port statistics, VLAN separation between the miners and the management network, and the ability to bounce a port from a chair instead of walking the aisle. When a machine drops off the pool at three in the morning, the first thing worth knowing is whether the link is down or the miner is.

What to check before you buy a used switch

Port count and link speed are the easy part. Three things catch people out. The total PoE budget matters more than the per-port maximum, because a 24-port switch will rarely power 24 devices at full draw. Managed and smart-managed are not the same thing, and the cut-down feature set is usually missing exactly the VLAN or SNMP capability you bought the switch for. And fan noise is irrelevant in a data hall and unbearable in an office.

The PoE budget decides this, not the port count

The Titan Networx TNSS-2400P has 24 gigabit copper ports and every one of them is PoE+, four gigabit SFP combo uplinks, 56 Gbps of switching bandwidth and a 1U steel chassis with the supply built in rather than a brick hanging off it. Listed new in box. The number that decides whether it fits your site is none of those: it is the 370 W total PoE budget, shared across the whole switch. Load all 24 ports and that is about 15 W each.

Fifteen watts a port is comfortable for 802.3af devices, for most single-radio access points and for fixed cameras. It is not enough for 24 PTZ cameras with heaters, and it is not enough for a floor of high-power Wi-Fi 6E access points, each of which will want close to the full 30 W that PoE+ allows. Add up what your actual devices draw before you assume 24 usable PoE ports, because a switch that browns out at four in the afternoon is worse than one that was sized honestly on day one.

The graphics card is here as computer hardware, not as a miner

The ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3090 OC is a 24 GB GDDR6X Ampere card on PCIe 4.0, three 8-pin connectors, 2.9 slots wide, and ASUS recommends an 850 W supply behind it. We sell mining hardware for a living and we are still telling you not to buy this to mine with: the workload that made a rack of these pay ended on 15 September 2022 when Ethereum moved to proof of stake. If hashrate per watt is what you are buying, buy an ASIC. The 24 GB of memory is worth paying for on a local AI or workstation build, which is the honest reason this card is on the site. Its condition is not stated in the listing — ask first and we will photograph the actual unit.
