The Greece crypto tax is now law. Cointelegraph and CoinDesk both report that the Greek parliament passed a 10% tax on crypto gains, starting January 1, 2027. Staking, lending and DeFi income gets 15%. Neither outlet mentions mining.

What the Greece crypto tax actually says

Per CoinDesk, the 10% applies to annual net crypto gains above 500 euros. Once you cross that line, the whole gain is taxable, not just the excess. Both outlets say spending crypto on goods or services can also trigger it, and tax is due within 60 days of declaring. CoinDesk adds that losses above 500 euros can be carried forward for five years.

Staking, crypto lending and liquidity provision are treated as interest income and taxed at 15%, per the Finance Ministry as quoted by CoinDesk. Neither article says whether that is taxed when received or when sold.

Where the sources differ on swaps

Cointelegraph says swapping one crypto for another does not create taxable gains. CoinDesk is more careful. The Finance Ministry says swaps will not trigger tax, but the Scientific Service of parliament warned the wording could cover them. So treat swaps as unsettled until the final text is tested. CoinDesk also reports a 12-month window to declare old gains without late penalties, subject to conditions.

Miner math: what bitcoin margins look like the day Greece sets its tax

Here is the live maths on November 6. Bitcoin is $75,437 and the network is 1037 EH/s, so hashprice is about $33.04 per petahash per day. That is what one PH/s of hashing earns before power.

Machine 5c/kWh 8c/kWh 12c/kWh Break-even
Antminer S19 (95 TH/s, 3250 W) -$0.76 -$3.10 -$6.22 4.0c
Antminer S19k Pro (115 TH/s, 2645 W) $0.63 -$1.28 -$3.82 6.0c
Antminer S19 XP (141 TH/s, 3010 W) $1.05 -$1.12 -$4.01 6.4c
Antminer S21 Pro (234 TH/s, 3510 W) $3.52 $0.99 -$2.38 9.2c

Numbers are profit per day after electricity, at the three power prices shown. Break-even is the most you can pay per kilowatt-hour before the machine loses money. Specs are the manufacturer ratings; network data comes from mempool.space. Try your own power price in our free bitcoin mining profit calculator. If tax worries shave 3% off bitcoin (a generous guess for one small country): the break-even power price on an S19k Pro falls from 6.0 to 5.8 cents per kilowatt-hour. At 8 cents, daily profit goes from -$1.28 to -$1.39.

The blunt answer for miners

Greece will not move your margin. It is a small market, and the rules do not mention mining, so we cannot say how mined coins would be treated. The table above is what matters. Bitcoin hashrate sits near 1037 EH/s per mempool.space, and at 8 cents most older machines lose money today. The real signal is the trend. Governments keep moving from bans to clear tax rules, and that is mildly good for demand over time. If your machines are underwater, see our we buy used miners page, or read the mining economics guides.
